Celebrating quiet ambition

Women excel at quietly but surely breaking down barriers and paving the way for others after them. Take Awich, Japan’s queen of hip-hop, for example. Not only does she embody quiet ambition with her persistence and talent, she has done so while juggling single-motherhood and gender-based adversity. Before her show in Hong Kong last month, she talked to Tatler about being proudly Okinawan, how tragedy has shaped her, and how music has healed her. Then there is the Cartier and Women exhibition at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, which honours successful women in history, and the culinary world celebrating powerful Asian female duos.

Quiet ambition isn’t an exclusively female trait, of course. In Hong Kong alone we can find many variations of quiet ambition. Take for example, Asian craftsmanship, which is experiencing a renaissance that is influencing the global luxury market; or the humble congee that is so good it made its way to the top of the list of best breakfasts in Hong Kong for a Tatler Hong Kong’s senior dining editor.
