Talk about eye candy—check out these fantastic dessert spots that hit the spot in both their look and taste

Gone are the days when an ice cream shop or gelateria is purely just a takeaway spot to beat the Singapore heat. Now the latest scoop we hear is that these spots now offer more than just sweet treats; these dessert destinations can become quite literally the place to be for a photo opportunity to post on the ’Gram.

We have seen it with the cult-favourite venue Museum of Ice Cream, which has become a modern tourist attraction for its enticing sweet treats and aesthetic. So it’s no surprise that ice cream parlours are heading in a similar visually-driven direction with their indulgent concepts and thoughtfully designed spaces.

Here, we have a peek at the new-age ice cream and gelato shops that are set to whet a design lover’s appetite.

Established in 2016, Birds of Paradise is an ice-cream parlour with a popular selection of homemade gelato flavours inspired by our Southeast Asian roots. Known best for its premium quality of botanical-inspired flavours such as White Chrysanthemum and Lychee Raspberry, it is no surprise that the local gelato boutique has taken off from its humble beginnings in Katong to running four other buzzy destinations around the island, including Jewel Changi Airport. In keeping with its aviary-themed moniker, the homegrown brand recently opened a boutique within Bird Paradise, the new location of the former Jurong Bird Park.

It is also no secret that the Birds of Paradise gelato boutiques are undeniably gorgeous venues that feature calming interiors in gentle hues crafted by Hjgher Studio, a Singapore-based design consultancy. Some outlets borrow inspiration from their surroundings and are housed in the most stunning heritage shophouses; these include their branches located along Craig Road and Beach Road.

A nut-based gelateria, Dopa Dopa aims to bring happiness to its customer with its array of flavours and experiences—fun fact: the dessert joint’s name “Dopa” comes from the word, dopamine.

Following this motto, each Dopa Dopa location has a unique, fun-spirited energy with retro-inflected interiors. For instance, the Dopa Dopa Tanjong Pagar Plaza boutique has a signature red terracotta wall exterior and minimalist white interiors. While its predecessor, Dopa Dopa on South Bridge Road, has exuberant pops of bright yellow inside and out.

Started in the heartlands of Toa Payoh in 2011, Creamier has become a household favourite among ice cream lovers in Singapore. Loved for its handcrafted flavours—each made regularly in small batches—the group has since expanded and offers these cherished desserts in unique locations like Gillman Barracks and Punggol Northshore.

Putting their ice cream at the forefront, each Creamier store takes inspiration from their different neighborhoods and features a consistent minimalist yet welcoming look. For example, the Creamier outlet in Gillman Barracks is nestled inside a former army barracks built in 1936 and takes advantage of its al-fresco spaces. The Creamier East Coast store is situated inside a historic site and retains the original element of Peranakan tiles. Another unique destination is the Creamier Punggol Northshore which is inside a developing residential town and is the group's first boutique located inside a shopping mall.

A quaint gelato shop in the East-side neighbourhoods of Bedok and Katong, Hay, Gelato is a not-so-secret gem for its must-have gelatos and delicious coffees and waffles. Besides its knack for artisanal and seasonal flavour choices, the gelateria is also on the mark for its rustic-style interior design and charming decor.

Whether you are relishing a scoop during the day or night, enjoy the pleasure of beautiful sights to be seen at its Bedok outlet with its rosy atmosphere or at the Katong outpost that imbues a more minimalist look and even offers locally-designed home goods which are available for purchase too.

Lovers of gelato will know that Burnt Cones is a mainstay. Elevating the dessert experience in Sunset Way and destinations like NeWest and The Sail at Marina Bay, the local gelateria serves as a great pit-stop for waffles and coffee too.

The best part of Burnt Cones to us has got to be the modern minimalist aesthetic that is seen in each outlet that spotlights its variety of gelato flavours. Each outlet features utilitarian furniture pieces and is swashed in a monochrome colour palette.

Fun and whimsical, WY-TO reimagines the idea of a regular gelato shop with fun expressions of comic-book-style illustrations, bursts of summertime colours, and bold geometric lines. With a concept that taps into childhood and the joys of getting an indulgent scoop of gelato, Nom Gelato celebrates this idea with a lively design that contrasts the street outdoors and plays into the owner’s sports hobby and other passions. Other creative references includes its fluid design that extends onto the floor that mimics a gelato melting under the sun and a white-tiled wall that eases into the transition into a waffle-inspired patterned wall in yellows and oranges for the dry kitchen.
